Running on the treadmill is an extremely popular form of cardiovascular training. And I know very few people that actually look forward to spending hours on the treadmill as a way to burn stubborn body fat. If you ARE one of those people, I question your sanity (just kidding….maybe)! Good news for those of you that loathe the treadmill. You don’t have to use the treadmill as part of your exercise routine. Bodyweight exercises used for cardio interval training are just as good if not better, and here are my top 5 reasons why:
#5. Bodyweight exercises take up no space, as opposed to the treadmill which can take up lots of room, especially if you don’t have much extra space in your home.
#4. Bodyweight exercises can be done anywhere – outdoors in your backyard or a park, or right in your living or bedroom. You can do them while on vacation. You could even do them in a prison cell if you had to (really hoping none of you do!). A treadmill on the other hand is pretty hard to take with you on vacation.
#3. Bodyweight exercises cost you nothing, where a treadmill can run from hundreds to even thousands of dollars.
#2. Bodyweight exercises are much more versatile and can even make your workouts fun (ok maybe fun isn’t the right word for everyone), where running on a treadmill gets boring after the first 30 seconds….at least it does for me anyway. You can also get a great workout done in 15 minutes or less.
And the #1 reason bodyweight exercises beat a treadmill any time of day – you won’t maim your child doing bodyweight exercises, where a treadmill can be extremely dangerous around young children. I speak from experience. After debating on whether to do a bodyweight circuit or run on the treadmill, I decided to use the treadmill for some interval training. Long story short, my son stuck his hand under the belt of the treadmill (right after I told him to stay away and NOT stick his hand anywhere near the belt). I won’t get into the details, but he ended up having to get a skin graft. So see, if I just woulda picked the bodyweight exercises, we would have been a lot better off! And needless to say, we no longer have a treadmill.
